Leyder third in ŠKODA Tour closing stage, Rekita fifth overall
Today, the last stage of the ŠKODA Tour de Luxembourg was on the menu. In a stage that went traditionally from Mersch back to Luxembourg, Pit Leyder rode himself to a third place. In the final GC, Szymon Rekita claimed position five.
Eight riders formed the break of the day and unlike the first two stages, Leopard was not represented. This was not an issue at all, since the race would be decided in the local circuits with four times the steep climb of the Pabeierbierg (825m at 9%), the last time being the finish. Leopard's Pit Leyder and Szymon Rekita found their position in front of the peloton for the final push. Just like yesterday's stage, Cofidis' Jesus Herrada - the race leader - was the strongest and took the stage and overall win. Just two seconds behind him, Pit Leyder was again able to impress and took the third position on the day. Not much later, Szymon Rekita crossed the line and improved his GC result with one position: fifth.
Markus Zingen, Team Manager: "We can be very proud about what we achieved at the ŠKODA Tour de Luxembourg. Thanks to a good focus, we were able to reach great performances again, with the whole team. Every day we were very active and had our results. Especially finishing on the podium on the final stage with our local rider Pit was great and the same goes for placing Szymon in the top five of the overall ranking. We hope to keep this good spirit now for the upcoming races, but of course this was already an important and big step to perform so well at our highlight of the season."
